In 1982, a group of women recognized a need for ongoing support for survivors of sexualized violence and increased public awareness of the issue. In 1983, they incorporated as "The Victoria Women's Sexual Assault Centre Society". Today, WSAC has a volunteer board and staff that serves over 2,500 survivors of sexualized violence each year. [ Backgrounder | PDF | 56KB ]

Overview

With an annual operating budget of 1 million, each year WSAC provides services for over 2,500 people through our Sexual Assault Response Team (SART); Group and Individual Counseling programs; 24-hour crisis & information line; an award winning prevention and education program called Project Respect(tm); and workshops for parents and friends. Our funding is diversified with approximately 46% provided by government contracts and 34% coming from the community through direct fundraising initiatives.

Working Partnerships

Survivors of sexualized violence should receive informed and caring assistance regardless of where they seek help. To achieve this goal we have working partnerships with community agencies, police detachments and the Vancouver Island Health Authority.

Project Respect works closely with schools and youth serving agencies to prevent sexualized violence.
